| Review:
Private
is
the
name
of a
European
company
that
started
out
(way
back
in
1965)
as a
magazine
title,
and
then
went
into
video
production.
This
is
their
main
web
site,
though
they
do
have
a
large
presence
elsewhere
on
the
net.
Shit,
you
can
even
buy Private
Energy
Drinks
(external
link).
As a
publicly
traded
company
they
probably
felt
it
was
in
their
shareholders'
interests
to
diversify.
(If
you
are
looking
to
invest
they
are
NASDAQ:
PRVT,
company
profile
page
www.prvt.com--external
link.)
Just
so
you
know:
We
don't
hold
any
Private
stock
and
we've
never
tried
the
energy
drinks. Private.com
is a
sleek,
professional-looking
site
that,
for
the
most
part,
makes
browsing
a
big
wad
of
content
easy.
Especially
nice
is
the
way
they
have
set
up
two
members
sections:
one
for
high-bandwidth
and
one
for
modem
users.
Very
thoughtful
and
user-friendly.
Can't
think
of
anybody
else
who's
done
that. As
noted,
Private
has
been
publishing
a
number
of
magazines
for
40
years
now,
and
they
also
have
several
lines
of
videos.
So,
as
far
as
content
goes
the
main
sections
are
the
magazines
and
the
videos.
Let's
deal
with
those
first. With
the
magazines
they're
giving
you
the
works.
Looks
like
all
of
their
magazines
from
1965
to
the
present
day
have
been
scanned
and
are
here
for
you
to
flip
through
(with
none
of
the
pages
stuck
together).
For
the
record,
here's
how
it
breaks
down:
185 Private
magazines,
89 Pirate
magazines,
63 Triple
X
magazines,
and
52 Sex.
That's
a
lot
of
magazines
to
browse.
The
downside?
Well,
first
of
all
you
should
be
aware
of
how
much
tastes
change
when
it
comes
to
porn.
Unless
you're
really
into
vintage
porn
(no
thongs,
no
silicon,
lots
of
bush,
and
really,
really
ugly
clothes)
you're
going
to
find
anything
before
say
the
mid
90s
to
be
pretty
grim.
In
addition,
the
scans
aren't
the
greatest.
The
default
setting
lets
you
look
at
the
pages
as
jpegs
of
around
800x600.
That's
not
that
big,
especially
for
a
full
page
of
magazine
layout.
That
is
to
say,
there
may
be
several
photos
on
one
page.
You
also
have
the
option
of
viewing
the
mags
as
pdf
files,
which
is a
bit
of
an
improvement
(you
can
zoom
for
one
thing),
but
it's
still
obvious
that
what
you're
looking
at
is a
scan.
That
is,
something
less
than
the
original. The
videos
are
drawn
from
some
of
Private's
different
labels,
like
Private
Gold
and
Triple
X.
There
were
100
movies
when
we
visited,
with
each
movie
represented
by,
on
average,
8
clips.
The
clips
can
be
viewed
as
streams
or
downloaded
and
are
usually
around
20
minutes
in
length
(whatever
the
length
of
the
full
scene
is). So
far
so
good.
Here's
the
bad
part: (1)
The
movies
don't
look
good.
A
really
small
screen
size
(looks
like
it's
been
letterboxed)
is
the
only
thing
that
makes
the
grim
300
kb/s
(!)
playback
appear
even
half
decent.
Really,
Private
should
be
able
to
do a
better
job
than
this. But
of
course
they
can!
The
only
thing
is .
. .
you'll
have
to
pay
more
for
it.
That's
right,
to
download
the
"ultra
high
quality"
files
you
will
cough
up
an
extra
$3.95
for
a three-day
"rental",
$8.95
for
a
month. "Rental"?
What's
that
about?
That
brings
us
to
the
next
point: (2)
The
movies
you
download
are
all
DRM
protected.
That
means
you
can
only
watch
them
for
as
long
as
you
are
a
member.
After
that,
they're
toast. Well
it's
probably
fair
to
say
that
nobody
likes
DRM.
In
defence
of
sites
that
use
it:
(a)
it's
not
as
bad
as
just
having
streaming
video,
which
is
all
some
sites
have;
and
(b)
the
big
labels
want
to
protect
their
content. We
have
no
beef
about
protecting
content,
but
our
complaint
here
is
this:
If
you're
going
to
use
DRM
to
protect
your
videos
anyway,
couldn't
you
at
least
make
the
video
quality
better
for
the
members?
To
be
honest,
we
don't
even
know
why
you
would
bother
protecting
video
files
this
poor
with
DRM. OK,
enough
of a
rant.
As
far
as
the
quality
of
the
material
is
concerned
(not
its
presentation),
Private
is
working
at a
very
high
level.
The
girls
are
hot,
the
photography
is
professional
(though
a
little
staged),
and
the
videos
very
well
produced
in
terms
of
costumes,
editing,
and
everything
else.
Most
of
the
pics
you'll
want
to
browse
are
in
the
general
area
called
"Stars".
This
is
one
place
where
we
thought
the
navigation
broke
down
a
bit,
but
if
you
surf
around
you'll
find
model
indexes
and
an
area
where
pics
are
filed
in
different
categories.
Most
of
these
pics
come
in
two
sizes,
but
not
all.
This
was
another
knock
against
the
site
as
the
regular
default
size
isn't
big
enough. Other
areas
to
visit
include
a forum
that
is
pretty
hopping
(led
by
some
serious
fans),
Live
Sex
provided
by
Flirt4
Free,
and
some
"Sextras".
The
Sextras
didn't
work
that
well
for
us
though.
JennaMaxxx
and
VideoSecrets
wouldn't
load.
This
is a
decent
site
that
still
disappointed
us
because
it
could
be a
lot
better.
Like
all
the
other
name-brand
adult
entertainment
companies
that
tried
to
make
the
jump
to
the Internet
(Penthouse,
Playboy,
Hustler,
etc.),
it's
made
its
first
priority
the protection
of
its
content.
Does
this
model
work?
We
really
have
our doubts.
The
magazine
archive
here
is
obviously
a
big draw,
and
it
is
quite
impressive.
The
Stars
area
is
where
you'll
find
all
the
best
photos,
and
most
of
them
are
a
decent
size.
But
the
videos--both
in
terms
of
playback
and
the
DRM protection--are
a
real
let-down.
And
the
fact
that
you
have
to
pay
even
more
for
the
DVD-quality
downloads
is a
rip.
This
site
isn't
cheap
as
it
is
(though
we
should
point
out
that
when
we
visited
they
had
a
special
deal
on
for
one
month's
membership
at
$19.95,
which
is
pretty
good). Certainly
if
you
know
Private's
stuff
and
you're
a
fan
you
should
check
this
out.
They
do
have
a
lot
to
offer.
But
we
thought
the
presentation
still
needed
some
work. |
