Review:

We've said it before, but for those of you who might have missed it we'll say it again: The softcore erotic photography niche is really getting crowded. And, what's worse if you're a new site, it's crowded with some very tough competition. It's an embarrassment of riches: MET Art, Hegre Archives, MC Nudes, Pure Beauty Mag, New Nude Mag, Galitsin News . . . and those are just some of the bigger European players. And there are more coming all the time. Just a couple of weeks before we came to this site we reviewed Whitfield Journals (which subsequently closed). Another good site--great girls, great photography, nice presentation, the complete package--and yet at the same time we couldn't escape the feeling that there's just too much of this stuff out there now. As we said in the Whitfield review, if artistic softcore nude photography is your thing, it's getting harder and harder to stand out from the crowd. And the fact that all of these sites have basically the same layout doesn't help.

So where does Uberbelle, which just launched August 2005, fit in? On their About page they describe themselves as "a unique kind of web magazine. One dedicated to the rapport between fashion and fine art nude photography. And the union of literature and pop culture." Do they live up to this billing? Are they unique?

Well, sort of. On the one hand it is more of the same. It's European (they translate the name as "super-beautiful") and softcore (title bar: "the erotic nude photography of fashion models"). There were 116 galleries total when we visited, updating with a new photo gallery every day (seven days a week). The photos come in three sizes: small (400x600), medium (800x1200), and large (1300x2000). Picture quality is very good, but the actual photography seemed kind of generic. We didn't see where they gave the name of who was taking the pictures. Maybe it's one person, and maybe it's just a house style. Either way it's kind of un-stylish. Even the backgrounds/sets seemed kind of bland. We're not big fans of Eastern European wallpaper, but the bare white walls here get a bit grim and repetitive. We also weren't sure about the supposed "rapport" between fashion and photography. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of "fashion" going on here.

The site tour will give you a good idea of the line-up of models. Maybe they're fashion models. There's no biographical information on any of them. Overall we would rate them just average for this niche. And for some reason they don't seem to be very happy. Maybe if someone gave them some toys to play with . . .

On to the extras. First of all there's the "union of literature and pop culture." This struck us as kind of interesting. What it turns out to be is a fiction section brought to you by an outfit called "Contemporary Literature." Their motto is "Fuck Literature." This, however, is more of a rebel aesthetic yell than a label. They aren't writing "fuck literature" (that is, erotica). The union of literature and pop culture doesn't necessarily mean anything sexy, and this isn't. It is kind of interesting, but it's not porn and we weren't sure it really fit with the rest of the site. In any event they had three short stories and what seemed to be two novels-in-progress going.

There are no videos. Again, as we've said before, we don't really care about this. Erotic photography sites tend to have boring videos anyway. But just so you know: There are no videos.

Finally you get a selection of 8 wallpapers and a store where you can buy prints of some of the pics.

Is this a decent site? Yes. It was still quite new when we visited, but they're updating daily with exclusive stuff, the picture quality is very good, and it all comes in at a nice price. The real question though is whether it measures up to all the other sites out there offering similar fare. And we'd have to say No. At least not yet. Most of these photography sites throw a ton of exclusive extras at you: journals, essays, behind-the-scenes stuff, photography tips, etc. But you don't get any of that here. We also thought it needed more style and personality. Who are the photographers? Who are the models? Why aren't they smiling?

If this was the only erotic nude photography site out there we'd highly recommend it. But it isn't, and we can't.
