| Review:
For
the
record,
here's
how
we
began
a
review
we
wrote
four
months
ago:
Sometimes
we
feel
like
we
just
want
to
mail
in
one
of
those
"express"-style
reviews
some
of
the
other
sites
do.
We
get
to
feeling
this
way
whenever
we're
reviewing
. .
. another
DVD
download
site.
The
site
we
were
reviewing
was VideoHub.
Not
a
bad
site
at
all.
In
fact,
we
kind
of
liked
it.
But
you
know
what
we
mean
about
reviewing
these
things.
These
DVD
download
sites
are
all
the
same.
And
there's
not
much
point
reviewing
them
in
the
first
place
because
what
you
see
is
what
you
get:
A
chance
to
download
a
bunch
of
DVDs.
Of
course
we
don't
think
reviewing
these
sites
is a
completely
pointless
exercise.
Here's
the
checklist
of
questions
that
are
worth
asking:
(1)
How
many
movies
do
they
have?
1122
DVDs
up
when
we
visited.
(2)
How
frequently
do
they
update?
Adding
a
new
movie
every
day.
(3)
What's
the
video
quality
like?
Do
you
get
any
choice
of
formats?
You
do
get
a
choice
of
formats.
There
are
four
download
options:
low-res
(256
kb/s)
and
high-res
(500
kb/s)
clips,
full
scene
mpegs
(360x288,
700
kb/s),
and
full
scene
DivX
files
(500x380
and
1100
kb/s).
That's
not
a
bad
selection,
but
really
only
the
DivX
files
(or
"XVids")
hold
up
by
today's
standards.
For
some
reason
the
couple
of
mpegs
we
watched
(watermarked
as
coming
from
wildpass.com)
were
of
incredibly
poor
quality.
It
looked
like
someone
had
put
the
film
through
a
blender
when
they
transferred
it
to
digital.
The
high
res
Windows
Media
files
are
better,
and
they're
still
below
average
for
this
niche. (4)
What
studios/titles
are
represented? For
the
most
part
it
seemed
like
the
usual
suspects:
Red
Light
District,
Jill
Kelly
Productions,
Elegant
Angel,
Notorious.
Maybe
they
have
some
stuff
that
nobody
else
has
got,
but
we
couldn't
tell
you
what
it
is.
Seems
to
be a
lot
of
stuff
in
the
"Gonzo"
and
"Anal"
categories,
but
that's
par
for
the
course.
In
any
event,
since
you
can
browse
their
entire
collection
without
joining
we
suggest
you
just
take
a
quick
tour
and
see
if
they've
got
something
you
want. (5)
What
about
the
price
point? A
little
high. (6)
What
about
presentation
(thumbnailing,
search
function,
editorial
material)? The
layout
is
pretty
much
the
same
as
all
the
other
DVD
download
sites.
You
can
browse
by
studio,
series,
or
performer.
You
get
a
good
selection
of
thumbnails
for
each
scene.
We
were
disappointed
a
bit
that
there
were
no
scene
descriptions.
In
fact
they
don't
even
list
the
names
of
the
stars
appearing
in
the
individual
scenes.
So
this
part
of
the
presentation
is
kind
of
bare
bones.
And
that's
it.
Nothing
wrong
with
this
(except
for
the
mpegs,
there's
something
very
wrong
with
them)
but
at
the
same
time
it
doesn't
do
anything
to
set
itself
apart
from
a
very
crowded
field.
And
it
certainly
doesn't
challenge
the
top
sites
in
this
category,
like
VideoBox
and Vixeo. |
